The Bag Lady Project

The bag lady was started by Vicky from Starling Village Backpackers to try and help with a couple of major problems that we as South Africans face every day of our life Skills development, unemployment, recycling and education.

What we do!

We encourage the poorer communities to clean up the areas they live in by providing the Bag lady with plastic packets that get left on the streets and in return we provide them with a tin of food or second hand clothing from our swop shop that get supplied by donors . Turning plastic into money!!!!

Secondly we use ladies from the community to take these bags and turn them into fashionable plastic bags like hand bags, laptop bags, beach bags ect.

The money raised from making these bags go towards funding school uniforms, employing underprivileged people from the nearby communities and the running of the bag lady.

  • 50% goes to the lady’s who work very hard to create these bags
  • 20% goes to buying school uniforms for kids with no money
  • 30% goes to funding the project.
Rent for the swop shop, electricity, transport, marketing and office work
